INTERVIEW

Autonomy and quality of life

By Marion Riedel, Messer Ibérica

Pepe Pedregal, Deputy Chairman of the Fundació La Muntanyeta foundation

What is the goal of your foundation?

We look after people with cerebral palsy who live in the province of Tarragona. We want to increase their rights and improve their quality of life. To this end, we provide high-quality services while at the same time seeking to foster their autonomy and participation in society. We currently have more than 100 clients in our school, in a day-care center and at a residential facility.

You are building a new center in Tarragona. What is your strategy here?

The new center, La Muntanyeta Bonavista, is intended to give disabled people a home and provide space for life projects – in a dignified and comfortable environment that allows individual autonomy. There is great demand in this area, with long waiting lists. The center will offer 50 day-care places and 60 residential places for adults.

What does your cooperation with Messer entail?

Messer was one of the first companies to make a commitment to our project. Thanks to this support, the new center will have a vacuum system and a supply of medical oxygen in each room. Suppliers hired by Messer for the project are also showing their solidarity, particularly the installation company Medicatubs.

Why do you need an oxygen supply system?

People with cerebral palsy often have breathing difficulties. The supply system permits the person concerned to be provided with health care in the room they are in. They can stay in pleasant surroundings – their own private sphere – when they need medical help. We hadn’t planned this originally – Messer came up with the idea.

How do you rate Messer’s contribution to your institution?

Thanks to this cooperation, we will improve the quality of our service in La Muntanyeta Bonavista and therefore provide even better care for our guests.
