INTERVIEW

Cold signal triggers well-being effect

Julien Voeffray, General Manager of SwissKryo

What services does SwissKryo provide? We offer cryosauna treatments in Aigle and Sion, Switzerland.

How did you get the idea to do this? As a passionate sports enthusiast, I run “ultra-trails” – in other words, very long distances on generally unpaved paths. Afterwards, muscles and joints hurt, and a visit to the cryosauna is very soothing. My partner Laurent Van Hoeymissen is a medical masseur, so he’s an expert in this field.

Do you recommend the cryosauna after sports? Among other things. Our clients report that it can also be very useful before a competition. They notice the difference in their final ranking. Others find that it helps reduce stress before the competition and to sleep better.

You also claim that it improves your appearance. When you sleep better and manage your stress well, you also generally look better. Users report to us that their skin feels both tighter and softer after the cryosauna.

What actually happens in the cryosauna? The body is exposed to -140°C nitrogen vapor for three minutes. Careful protective measures are taken, of course, for sensitive areas such as the eyes. In this short period, the body barely cools down at all – to many people, the cold even feels more like heat.

Then how do you explain the effects? It primarily involves the sensation of temperature, the signal that the extreme cold triggers. You might say that the body switches into a sort of intensive supply mode. The circulation ramps up and endorphins are released. The actual effect that feels so soothing doesn’t start till after you leave the sauna.

How much nitrogen do you use? Per person and session, it takes seven to eight liters of liquid nitrogen, which we draw from a 6,000-liter tank.

Why do you buy the gas from Messer? The price is right, and Messer is very serious and efficient. Deliveries are always fast and reliable, and we have very good personal contact with the company.
