In a country where driving is a national obsession, spirited cars make hearts beat faster. The overwhelming attendance at auto shows bears this out no less than the latest sales figures, because the Model T’s descendants are still Germany’s first love. But all that glittered wasn’t always gold. From under the sparkling paint, ugly rust spots emerged all too soon – especially along weld seams. Unacceptable to car enthusiasts because of the expense, the situation is now under control thanks to the concerted efforts of the auto industry in recent years. More than a few manufacturers now offer a six-year anti-corrosion warranty. The reason for this lies in new coating methods, but also in modern welding technology. Welding with argon gas mixtures has particularly improved the weld quality and reduced both splatter and the expensive rework associated with it. This is also true for increasingly widespread automation.

What robots cannot do is welded by hand. Assembly lines and shift work are longstanding traditions in the auto industry.

Until recently, most things were welded by hand, but throughout the automotive sector, robots are taking over more and more of this work now. But manual welding can smooth over differences – e.g., bridging the gap between two welded parts – better than automated welding. Welding with Argomix® helps here with its precise and wider arc. That’s why the Ford plant in Saarlouis, Germany, converted from carbon dioxide to Argomix®. Patented by Messer Griesheim, this gas mixture is the only liquid pre-mixed shielding gas for welding. The shielding gas customer service conducted extensive preliminary testing, prepared quality studies and cost analyses, and converted the welding units on a weekend. Thousands of “Escorts” and “Orions” are rolling off the assembly line at the Ford plant in Saarlouis every week now, and they are welded almost exclusively with Argomix® – to the benefit of the automaker and the car owners alike.
